What about a quasi-Hamlet? Mom issues + existential fear as a failure (of bad films + disposable music) + every live show is a sword fight (expressionism of relying on an uppers/downers routine.)

An excellent read, looking forward to taking in part 2. I would suggest on one point that the character of Elvis does have a quirk that fates him to tragedy, though it's one of the film's more understated themes: what he can't say, he sings. And in returning to this principle more and more over time, he ends up saying nothing and singing everything.

Amazingly well written, I saw Elvis 4 times this summer after it had been one of my most anticipated movie for a long while just because I was excited to see Baz's newest shiny project. Like you, I fell into a daze of wanting to learn as much as I could about him, but nothing stands better than the movie. You perfectly encapsulated what makes the movie so special and ultimately just so addicting. It sticks in your mind unlike anything else!

Loved your article. I’m 63 and was a teen in the 70’s. Elvis just wasn’t cool to us. He was a caricature that resided in gaudy Las Vegas. I too have become obsessed with all things Elvis. Yes I missed out on the real party but Baz has given me a VIP seat to something even better.
