What about a quasi-Hamlet? Mom issues + existential fear as a failure (of bad films + disposable music) + every live show is a sword fight (expressionism of relying on an uppers/downers routine.)

An excellent read, looking forward to taking in part 2. I would suggest on one point that the character of Elvis does have a quirk that fates him to tragedy, though it's one of the film's more understated themes: what he can't say, he sings. And in returning to this principle more and more over time, he ends up saying nothing and singing everything.
